Our Eye Clinic in Orangeville

Dr. Darren Leblanc received a Bachelor of Science degree from Laurentian University in 1997. He went on to complete a Doctor of Optometry degree in 2001 from the University of Waterloo. On graduation, he was awarded the Dr. Michael Gutwein Memorial Award. 

In 2001, he completed an ocular health externship just outside Tampa, Florida. He is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and certified by the Ministry of Health and the College of Optometrists of Ontario to prescribe ocular therapeutic drugs. 

He lives in Orangeville with his wife Lisa and three children. he is an active volunteer in the local Orangeville community and spends most of his free time coaching youth lacrosse.

Dr. Wong was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada with her family when she was nine years old. She is fluent in both Chinese (Cantonese) and English. At age ten, she got her first pair of glasses, and ever since, her goal has been to pursue a career in eye care. 

During her high school years, she held various jobs in vision care, including a position as a frame stylist and working as a lab technician, edging glasses. Throughout her university career, she worked in ocular research, performing eye dissections and studying aberrations of the visual system. During her final year of study, she completed an ocular pharmaceutical and disease externship at The Eye Institute in New Port Richie, Florida. In 2002, she underwent LASIK to correct her myopia and astigmatism. The procedure was a great success, and she is happy to say she is still free of corrective lenses and has better than 20/20 vision.

Dr. Wong graduated with honours from the University of Waterloo in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctorate of Optometry. She received the Essilor Award of Excellence in Optics upon graduation. She joined the practice of Dr. DiBerardino and Dr. Rutyna in 2001 and has been part of the Orangeville Optometrists eye care team ever since.

Dr. Wong is married with two young daughters. She has now returned to full-time practise since the birth of her second daughter in August 2010.

Dr. Philip Patafio graduated from the University of Waterloo, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree as well as his Doctorate of Optometry degree in 2009. During his Optometry studies, he completed an externship in Queens, New York, where he worked at St. Albans Veterans Affairs hospital. His primary focus there was on glaucoma and ocular disease treatment for US Military Veterans.

His past experiences allowed him to work alongside leading ophthalmologists, exposing him to an array of ocular surgical procedures and techniques. He is certified by the Ministry of Health and the College of Optometrists of Ontario to prescribe ocular therapeutic drugs.

Dr. Patafio has been a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists since 2009 and has brought his array of experiences, as well as his enthusiasm for eye care, to Orangeville Optometrists since 2008.

Dr. Catrina Costanzo graduated with Honours from the School of Optometry in 2010. At her graduation, she was honoured to be awarded the Dr. Irving Baker Scholarship for Clinical Excellence. That same year, she became a member of Orangeville Optometric Centre’s team of optometrists.

Dr. Costanzo adores practising in the Orangeville community and is passionate about providing the highest level of care to her patients. She is keen on being attentive to her patients’ unique needs and takes pride in offering the most thorough, personalized, and advanced care with respect to instrumentation and therapies in the field of optometry and vision care.

Other than private practice, Dr. Costanzo has extensive experience in a variety of eye care settings. During her optometric studies, she interned with leading experts in the field of glaucoma research at Toronto Western Hospital. The following year, she gained extensive knowledge in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ocular disease, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and ocular surface disease (dry eye) during her internships in Florida and New York City.

Dr. Costanzo is a member of both the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Association of Optometrists. She loves reading, cycling, playing piano, and spending time with her husband and three children. Dr. Costanzo is an active volunteer and contributor within her community and is always seeking out new opportunities to learn, develop skills, and grow personally and professionally.

Dr. Mathew Silva was raised in nearby Brampton and graduated from the University of Waterloo, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree as well as his Doctorate of Optometry degree in 2020. During his Optometry studies, he completed his ocular health clerkship in Newmarket, Ontario, working alongside ophthalmologists, exposing him to a wide variety of ocular conditions.

Dr. Silva is certified by the Ministry of Health and the College of Optometrists of Ontario to prescribe ocular therapeutic drugs. He is also a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists.

Outside of work, Dr. Silva enjoys spending time outdoors walking his dogs or working in the garden. He also enjoys board games with his friends and bowls in 10-pin bowling leagues. In the summer months, you can often find Dr. Silva coming to work on his motorcycle.

Dr. Diana Alarcon graduated from La Salle University in Colombia in 1995. She practiced optometry in Colombia for four years in a corporate setting before pivoting to work with an underserved population in a local community hospital, an experience she found incredibly rewarding.

Before moving to Canada, Dr. Alarcon participated in a training program for Latin American Optometrists at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, USA. After relocating to Canada in 1999, she worked as an optometric assistant, gaining significant experience from seasoned mentors and acquiring invaluable real-world clinical skills. She then completed the International Optometry Bridging Program (IOBP) at the University of Waterloo and obtained her license to practice in Ontario in 2005.

Since then, Dr. Alarcon has practiced in various optometry settings, including side-by-side, privately owned, and ophthalmologist offices. For over a decade, she served a large senior population at a corneal specialist clinic, where she gained extensive experience in managing anterior ocular diseases, including pre-and post-corneal transplant care, dry eye, pre- and post-cataract care, and co-management of glaucoma patients.

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Alarcon is a proud member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

Dr. Jack DiBerardino received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo. He went on to complete a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1986, also from the University of Waterloo. In 1995, Dr. DiBerardino received his certificate in the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease from Northeastern State University.

Before his time with Orangeville Optometric Centre, Dr. DiBerardino worked with TLC Laser Eye Centers, where he was a part-time staff optometrist. His experience in the eye care industry has led him to sit on numerous advisory boards. He is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists. He is a certified Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Assistive Devices Plan (ADP) authorizer and vendor.

He lives in Orangeville with his optometrist wife, Elizabeth, and their four children.

Dr. Elizabeth Rutyna received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo. She received her Doctorate of Optometry degree in 1986 from the University of Waterloo, and on graduation, was the recipient of the Ciba Award for Clinical Excellence. 

In 1995, Dr. Rutyna received her certification in the Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease from Northeastern State University and is certified by the Ministry of Health and the College of Optometrists of Ontario to prescribe ocular therapeutic drugs. She is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists and the Ontario Association of Optometrists.

Dr. Rutyna has been providing eye care in Orangeville since 1989 and enjoys living in this vibrant community with her optometrist husband, Jack, and their four active children.
